Charles Kingsley wrote of The Oxenham Arms in his famous novel Westward Ho . The Oxenham Arms was the entire setting for the Author Eden Philpotts novel The Beacon. Its name is derived as it was the birthplace of Captain John Oxenham Sir Francis Drakes Ally and 1st Navigator for the English fleet and a renowned Pirate in the mid early 1500's. Unique in the world - the building is constructed of Granite and Oak around a famous massive 5000 year old South Zeal Prehistoric Granite Standing Stone which is around 1000 years older than Stonehenge. The stone still stands in the ancient snug behind the bar and you can sit next to the stone in the evening by a lovely log fire.Food at The Oxenham Arms..The Ox food philosophy is to serve locally sourced foods for lunches and evening meals, Sunday lunches for example are only £8.95 - brilliant great value menus for lunch, evening and fun bar food. South Zeal is within the Dartmoor National Park just 5 minutes off the main A30 Dual Carriageway to Devon and Cornwall. Only 20 minutes from Exeter and 15 minutes from Chagford. Take the A382 Whiddon Down and Services junction off the A30 and through Whiddon Down over a roundabout on for half a mile.
